Sausages, scotch eggs

St. Paul's Qithedra! The dome, perhaps, the best known of London's landmarks, is 365 feet high, and beneath it is the celebrated «Whispering Gallery». Christopher Wren is buried there. His tombstone bears a Latin inscription, «Lector, si monumentum requiris» (Reader, if you seek his monument, look around you). Among the many memorials to famous men within the Cathedral are the tombs of Wellington, victor of Waterloo, and Nelson, hero of Trafalgar.

После ланча Сергей просматривал у себя в номере английские газеты. Около 5 часов пришли Эдна и Джон. Когда Сергей открыл дверь, он сразу узнал Эдну по той фотографии, которую Джон показывал ему в самолете. S. Hello, John.

J. Hello, Serge. This is Edna. Let me introduce you to her.

S. Hello, Edna. I'm so glad to meet you. John has told me so much about E. I'm very glad to meet you too. John and I are going to take you out tonight.

Where would you like to go? To the cinema, to a pub or to a disco? S. To a pub? What's that? E. Oh, you don't know what English pubs are.

I'll tell you about them. Pubs have been part of the British way of life for years and years and years. I've heard that when the Romans came to England in 55 BC they noted that the Britains regularly met in their taverns to drink ale and discuss problems.

Nothing much has changed since then. We still go to a pub to meet friends and have a chat. You can also buy food in some pubs: they serve hot sausages, scotch eggs, pork pies, THEREUPON sandwiches or a ploughman's lunch.
